In the year 874, the first Norse settlers set foot on Iceland. They were escaping war, poverty and the dissolution of their political freedoms in mainland Scandinavia. Their kin soon followed and claimed the empty lands, free from rulers and religious pressures, becoming lone farmers, determined to survive in this harsh new environment. These are their stories.

Play as an Icelandic settler between the end of the 9th and 10th centuries, also known as the time of the Icelandic Sagas, and weight between upholding your honour, freedom your life. Tell the stories of the settlers families, their lives, trials and legacies. Discover or change history as you forge a veritable Saga worthy to echo through time.

Sagas of the Icelanders is a Powered by the Apocalypse game (meaning its rules are based on Apocalypse World by Meguey and Vincent Baker). It is a role playing game where the rules constrain you according to the social norms, customs and literary tropes of the sagas and ask what you will you do with these constraints? Will you honour history, or turn it aside?

The game was published in 2013 with the help of crowdfunding. It is currently available for purchase in PDF format from Indie Press Revolution, DriveThruRPG and Print copies have currently run out, but there are some plans for the future. Thank you for your patience.

  • Sagas of the Icelanders sheets and playbooks
  • digital copy of the Iceland map that came with the crowdfunding campaign

There is a G+ community for the game here, with discussion and actual play reports.

The game has been translated into Russian, and there are French and Italian translations pending.
